There’s a Chinese superstition that says it’s never a good idea to pick up any money you see on the street. While some may think that they are lucky to find free money, superstition says we should be more concerned about the bad luck it brings.

Recently, a man who was on his way to McDonald’s came across a shiny red money packet on the grounds of a parking lot. He was curious about it and went on to check it out.

To his surprise, he found an entire stack of cash inside. Meanwhile, he also showed off his discovery on TikTok.

It is believed that the red packet contains about S$1,000 (≈RM3,190).

However, in the comment section, many netizens ‘congratulated’ him and pointed out that he may have unknowingly accepted a ghost bride.

Ghost bride

According to Chinese superstition, when an unmarried woman passes away, her family may place red packets filled with money on the ground as the last bid to find her a partner in the afterlife.

It is said that the first living man who pick the red packet up will be the groom to this deceased ‘bride’, whether he likes it or not.

If he refuses to accept, then he can only expect a lot of bad luck in his life.

This living groom will then acts as the dead bride’s partner in the afterlife, considering that she was still single at death. Meanwhile, some people believe that only the ‘chosen one’ can even see the red money packet, which further cements the unknowing groom’s fate.
