An advertisement by AEON Retail Malaysia promoting the Super Ring snacks has gone viral online but for the wrong reasons.
Last Wednesday (24 August), the retail giant has taken to its official Facebook page to promote that the Super Ring snacks are available in stores at all their outlets and even on their online store.
“We heard a lot of people are looking for Super Rings today. They’re right here at AEON or you can order them online at myAEON2go and we’ll send them over to you,” the retail giant wrote in the Facebook post.

However, the post was not well received by a certain group of netizens and sparked a huge outrage online, which led the retail group to delete the post shortly after.
Many netizens believe that AEON was mocking the convicted former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak after he was sent to prison after the Federal Court decided to uphold his guilty verdict over the misappropriation of RM42 million belonging to government-owned SRC International Sdn Bhd.

However, a Twitter user managed to take a screenshot of the Facebook post and took it to Twitter to call out the retail group for the controversial post.
Twitter user @mynewshub said this Super Ring promo was offensive and it was a cheap marketing strategy to use a trending controversial topic. It then called on others to boycott the retail group.
After reading AEON’s post, it makes me want to buy Super Ring. Good marketing.

On the other hand, there were those who supported AEON for their brilliant marketing plan and said the post was merely promoting the Super Ring snack and nothing political.
For context, former Prime Minister Najib Razak previously posted a photo of himself enjoying Super Ring snacks when Tun Mahathir resigned as the 7th Prime Minister with the caption, “Heard someone got fired?”.
