Artists and celebrities have a great influence over the public and this is why they should be aware of their actions, especially in public places.
Recently, Malaysian singer Noh Salleh caught the public’s attention by holding an unlit cigarette while modelling the clothes by a streetwear brand known as Super Sunday on the Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2022 runway.
While some said the cigarette was to add to the ‘bad boy’ look, others said he should not even bring it as a prop.
“Prop or not, people will see it as a trend. He’s an influencer, so people will follow. If you want to be an influencer, keep your bad habits to yourself if you wish to be an influencer.” a netizen said on Twitter.
“He shouldn’t bring it as a prop. The attention should be on the clothing to respect the brand and designer. The fact that we are trying to discourage smoking and with him doing this, it could potentially bring back as a trend for younger viewers,” another netizen said.
When we are trying so hard convince young people not to smoke by proposed anti-smoking law, and here we got someone promoting it without a care in the worlds. Should use his influence for something else. Disappointed with Noh Hujan.— . (@wabisaby) August 22, 2022
Meanwhile, the incident also caught the Health Ministry’s (KKM) attention and they have since responded to the matter.
In a statement, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry takes this matter seriously and condemns the act that ‘glamorises’ smoking and vaping in public.
Dr Noor Hisham said this is a bad example to society, especially to children and teenagers.
“The actions and habits of celebrities were always watched and imitated by society. As such, they have a responsibility to show good behaviour which will be an example to society,” he said.
Thus, he urged everybody, including artists and celebrities, to help the ministry to eradicate smoking habits by making smoking an unacceptable culture in society.
“From the health standpoint, smoking or vaping brings ill health both to the smokers and those around them,” he added.
