NewsBreaking: Federal Court upholds Najib's conviction, sends him to jail immediately

On Tuesday (23 August), the Federal Court dismissed former premier Najib Razak’s final appeal to overturn his corruption conviction and 12-year jail sentence linked to a former subsidiary of 1MDB.

Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat ruled that the former prime minister failed to show how the findings of the lower courts were perverse and needed the intervention of the Apex Court, reported NST.

She added that the five-panel judge was satisfied with the decisions of the High Court and Court of Appeal and that the sentences were also not manifestly excessive.

“On the totality of the evidence, we find the conviction of the appellant on all seven charges safe. We also find that the sentence imposed is not manifestly excessive.”

“These appeals are therefore unanimously dismissed and the conviction and sentence are affirmed, warrant of committal is issued,” she said.

The other judges on the panel were the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, Datuk P Nallini, Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan and Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah.

This decision means Najib is set to begin serving his jail term immediately.

Present in court to hear the outcome were Najib’s wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and family members. Also present was UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

In July 2020, the Kuala Lumpur High Court found Najib guilty of misappropriating RM42 million of SRC International funds and ordered him to be jailed for 12 years and RM210 million fine for the seven charges he faced.

He was convicted and sentenced by the then High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali.

Meanwhile, convicted prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has also left the Federal Court to the Kajang prison. According to photos taken by Bulletin 3, Najib arrived at the Kajang prison on 6.05 pm and was escorted by police.

Malaysians’ reaction

On social media, many praised the apex court’s decision for upholding justice, while others posted memes and photoshopped images of Najib behind bars. Some also said that the decision was akin to a Merdeka gift.

“Najib Razak, the epitome of political corruption in Malaysia, is finally going to jail. For this to happen during the Merdeka month is absolutely glorious,” a netizen said.

“Najib went to jail. Hopefully, he will stay in there quietly and will not come out suddenly, just like the K-dramas,” another netizen said.
