On Saturday (13 August), fishermen and villagers in Kuala Perlis were bewildered after a ‘spaceship-looking’ superyacht appeared on the coast of Sungai Perlis.
According to Berita Harian, the Adastra superyacht which costs around USD45 million (more than RM200 million) was seen entering the waters near the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal at about 12 pm on Saturday (13 August).
It is believed that the superyacht have travelled from Langkawi to the area for repair works at a nearby shipyard.
Speaking to the Malay daily, Perlis Fishermen’s Association (PELARIS) board member Jasmi Hashim said his party was informed by fishermen and residents around the entrance of Sungai Perlis about the presence and movement of the luxury yacht and that no complaints were received from the passage.
“In fact, we also understand that the luxury yacht is actually moving to the Perlis Marine Engineering (PME) Sdn Bhd dock located in Kampung Tengah Kuala Perlis for repairs,” he said.
It was also reported that the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) also confirmed that the marine office in Perlis granted the yacht permission to dock at PME.
Meanwhile, videos of the superyacht have since gone viral online, with netizens highlighting the contrast of the ultra-luxury vessel with the rustic boats at the fishermen’s village.
A resident, Mat Che Ya, 53, said although he has seen many medium-sized ships pass through the estuary, such sophisticated luxury yachts are rarely seen in the area.
“Many ships have passed through here, but they are not that big. So when yachts like that cruised through here, it looked like a spaceship on the water because it didn’t look like a ship or boat that we usually see.” he was quoted as saying.
