Last Saturday (23 July), about 500 people gathered at the Sogo shopping complex to join the #Turun protest against the rising cost of living.
Commenting on the protest, Minister of Multimedia and Communication Tan Sri Annuar Musa said that he believed protests will not help in combating inflation. In addition, he also said that slashing the ministers’ salaries and allowance will not suffice in battling inflation.
“Can you name me one country that manages to bring down the inflation by making pay cuts? If you take RM10,000 from each minister, how much money can you get?”
“Can you assure me the inflation is solved, the price of goods wouldn’t go up? Come on, don’t play politics,” he said, reported Malay Mail.
Besides that, Annuar said Malaysians should also be thankful that the country has the 2nd lowest prices of goods in the Asean region.
He said this was based on the World Bank’s report regarding the food basket program, i.e. a healthy diet and this report compare Malaysia with its Asean neighbours in regards to its ability to provide all families with healthy food and fulfil the criteria of a healthy diet for the entire nation.
“The report placed Malaysia at second place when it comes to having the lowest prices in goods in Asean. It also consisted of electricity tariffs, water tariffs, cooking oil prices and multiple food products.”
“Being Malaysians, we should be thankful and proud of this achievement,” he was quoted as saying by FMT.
Meanwhile, his comments did not go well with Malaysians and many had taken it online to criticise him.
Any austerity measures must start from head to to toe. Not from rakyat to PM. Cut 10k can save about 400k a month YB Annuar. This amount is very big for many. Sufficient to to hundreds of B40 children a month. Caring & sharing is the best way to help rakyat.— DJ Vetharatna (@vetharatna) July 26, 2022
“I live in Malaysia. When prices go up in Malaysia, I suffer the consequences in Malaysia. The fact that it’s the second lowest in the region doesn’t matter to me, as things are still expensive to me here in bloody Malaysia,” a netizen said.
“I fully agree. Even cutting 100% of salary and allowance will not affect inflation. They will never suffer like the rakyat because of the millions in their bank. Which is why they should be cut,” another netizen said.
