Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has recently come under fire after eagle-eyed netizens spotted him wearing a pair of shoes that allegedly costs up to RM38,000.
On social media, some netizens questioned how he could afford the pair of high-end shoes, considering he was only in his role of Menteri Besar for 3 months.

In response to the backlashes, Onn Hafiz has taken to his official Facebook page to share that the pair of shoes was a gift from the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar.
He then criticized certain media platforms for running stories about this and said, “Such slander and accusations has to be stopped. For the record, this is a gift from His Majesty, the Sultan.”
He added that the Sultan had also in the past purchased gifts for former state government members, to keep them motivated.
“This is not a new thing, in fact, His Majesty has also given gifts to the previous government exco and to state government officials as motivation to always work hard for the people,” he said.
Johor Regent, TMJ responsded
Following the backlashes, Johor Regent, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim advised Onn Hafiz to ignore the brickbats and to focus on serving the state and its people.
Taking it to Twitter, Tunku Ismail sarcastically suggests that Onn Hafiz should wear slippers instead of shoes after this.
“Datuk Onn Hafiz, I advise you to focus on your job for the state of Johor. Don’t pay too much attention to what the people wanted to say. What is pertinent is to carry out the work,” TMJ said, adding that he is also thinking about rewarding ministers with watches.
