The cost of living in the country has skyrocketed since the beginning of the year, following the supply chain disruptions globally that were caused by Covid-19 lockdowns and the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.
In the meantime, apart from the cost of living, even the cost of dying has experienced a price hike.
Recently, the Malaysian Funeral Association revealed that funeral packages are expected to go up as high as 20% by 1 August this year. The association explained that this is due to the rising prices of funeral goods and prayer items which saw an increase from 30% to 250%.
For example, it said the 2-days 1 night package will rise from RM10,000 to RM12,000 and the funeral package for 3-days 2 nights will increase from RM20,000 to RM24,000, and so on.
At the same time, the association also reminded other funeral businesses out there to be sympathetic towards their customers during the tough times and consider if the decision to increase the price of funeral packages is final.
Meanwhile, netizens were shocked by this news and many questioning why the cost of dying is much more than the cost of living. Many also expressed that they can’t even think of dying now because of the exorbitant cost.
“Don’t die if you don’t have money,” a netizen said.
“I can’t afford to die, so I might as well work hard and continue living,” another netizen said.
On the other hand, other netizens suggested other more cost-saving funerals.
“When I die, just cremate me. Then bury my ashes under the tree or throw them into the sea,” a netizen said.
“I’ve told my children, just cremate me in the future. It’s time and cost-saving and they can keep the money to themselves,” another netizen said.
