In Malaysia, it appears that we have a culture of treating politicians as celebrities and one of the best examples of this is that crowds will gather at the airport terminal to welcome them back on their return to the country after their overseas trip.
Just last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob found himself surrounded by a massive crowd at the airport terminal on his return from his 4-day working visit to the United States.
Recently, Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin also received similar treatment where a crowd gathered at KLIA2 to welcome her home from her work visit to Turkey.
Apparently, this was in light of her recent announcement to leave Bersatu to join Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).
In a press conference at the airport terminal, Zuraida said she is not ready to announce her latest political platform, as she first needs to hold discussions with the government and Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).
She added that her status is still not finalised with neither PBM nor the government.
Her return was much like a fanfare from PBM, with their supporters giving the minister a flower garland and bouquet in the colour of the party — purple — and a banner hailing her as “Ibu Bangsa Malaysia”, or “Mother of the Malaysian People”.
However, the entire fanfare did not go well with Malaysians with many taking to social media to express their disapproval.
“Stop idolising these politicians… they are to serve us… not the other way around,” a netizen said.

Many also poke fun of the banner that labels her as the “Mother of the Malaysian People”.
“Err.. no thanks. I rather be an orphan.” a netizen said.
Meanwhile, many also asked how much they had pay for the crowd and said this is just another publicity stunt organised by Zuraida in order to appear to be popular.
