Students who are eligible for tablets under the Peranti Siswa Keluarga Malaysia programme are expected to receive them in the second week of June, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa.
Communications and Multimedia (KOMM) Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said the first roll-out is planned to be 30 days from the date of application, which was opened on 15 April.
The second roll-out will be in August, which is 60 days after the application process for those who apply late and for appeal cases.
The government has allocated RM450 million for the programme and it involved orders of 350,000 units of high-quality tablets with accessories including a keyboard.
Annuar said the ministry had opted for high-quality tablets rather than low-quality laptops after receiving advice from the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) and take into consideration the feedback of a trial run on a focus group involving students.
Meanwhile, he said the brand and the supplier of the device will be announced next week.
He also reassured that the tablets will be of a well-known brand in the market and not of low quality as suspected by some.
About 350,000 students from B40 families pursuing diplomas, advanced diplomas and Bachelor’s degrees from public and private institutions of higher learning (IPTA), polytechnics and community colleges under the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), will be eligible to apply for the Keluarga Malaysia Student Device initiative.
