Wearing a face mask in public places is still a requirement despite the country moving forward to transition into the endemic stage.
Recently, a 18-second video on TikTok showing a man refusing to wear a face mask in a supermarket went viral.
The incident has taken place inside the Village Grocer M City Ampang branch on Saturday (16 April), the man can be seen confronting an employee and one of the security guards, both of whom remain calm.
The Caucasian man can be heard asking, “what are you gonna do?” and when the guard doesn’t say anything, the man exclaims, “exactly!” as if to signal that they can’t do anything anyway.
He then gives the guard a middle finger sign and walks away. Before walking out of the supermarket, he once again told the guards to “f*ck off!”.
Meanwhile, wearing a face mask in public places is still mandatory in Malaysia.
This has been stipulated under the current SOPs and those who refuse to wear one can be fined under Rule 16 (1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Rules 2021. It carries a fine of up to RM1,000 or a jail term of up to 6 months or both.
As of the time of writing, the authorities have yet to respond to the incident but netizens were not happy with this. Many criticised the man for not respecting the local rules and regulations.
Some also pointed out that the man is just showing his white supremacy.
