“Stop sucking rakyat’s blood!” Minister calls out airlines for hiking prices of tickets during festive seasons

It is the Ramadan month and Hari Raya Aidilfitri is approaching. Many who left their hometown to work in the cities have started to plan their schedules ahead for balik kampung.

Prices of travel tickets had been soaring due to the spike in demand, especially when interstate travel is now allowed. For many, it has been past 2 years since they balik kampung for the festive season too.

Unfortunately, the price hikes had turned many off and cancel their trips back to their hometowns.

Responding to this situation, State Minister of Works of Sabah, Bung Moktar Radin took to his Facebook account on 14 April to slam airlines for setting unaffordable prices.

“A 1-way economy ticket back to Sabah costs about RM2,800. Some even reach up to RM3,600.” he wrote.

He then called on the Ministry of Transportation to look into the matter and resolve it immediately following the complaints from Sabahans who wish to return home.

“This incident should not have happened. To the airlines, stop gaining profit by sucking the rakyat’s blood,” he said.

He also lamented about the check-in method where travellers are required to do so through a machine and anyone who checks in through the counter will be charged RM100.

He said “airlines should understand that in Sabah, a lot of people still do not have the luxury to own a smartphone. The uncles & aunties from rural areas still cannot grasp how to operate the check-in machine.”

To end his statement, he urged the airlines to “stop sucking the rakyat’s blood!”

What do you think about this? Do you think it is right for airlines to increase prices of air tickets just because there is a huge demand for it? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
