UiTM lecturer berates B40 student during online class for not being able to afford a laptop

A local university professor has come under fire after making comments about a student and the B40 community during an online class.

In the viral video, the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) professor can be heard telling a student that she “cannot sit with B40 people (students)” as they have other things to worry about besides their education.

This came after the student informed the professor that he was using his phone for the online class as he did not have a laptop or computer.

According to Berita Harian, UiTM has since taken appropriate action against the professor for berating students from the B40 community.

The university’s vice chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Hajah Roziah Mohd Janor said they will not compromise with anyone who damages the name of the university, intentionally or otherwise.

“Following the viral sharing of a video on social media involving the actions of a UiTM lecturer who made sensitive comments, the university has investigated the issue and taken swift and appropriate action against the lecturer,” she said in a statement.

The vice chancellor explained that the professor is a contract lecturer at the UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak branch, and teaches at the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU).

“I understand that the incident happened last semester, but it had only gone viral yesterday. This issue must have a plan as to why it was only uploaded yesterday,” she said.

Dr Hajah explained that the woman involved in the incident is actually a good lecturer, and may have made a small mistake in regard to her behaviour while scolding the student.

“However, action will be taken. And as for the student, we have found him and given him the equipment he needs.” she added.

Stay tuned for more updates.
