PM Ismail Sabri violated election rules by wearing shirt with party logo during Johor polls survey

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is now facing the backlashes from Malaysians after netizens spotted him allegedly breaking the election rules while conducting a survey on the voting process near a polling centre in Kempas yesterday (12 March).

The photos of the incident was shared by the national news agency Bernama on as well as by Ismail Sabri’s official Twitter account.

During his visit to SK Perumahan Tampoi 2, the polling centre in Taman Siantan, Ismail can clearly be seen wearing a shirt and cap that are brandishing the Barisan Nasional logo, which clearly is an offence under the election rules set out by the Election Commission of Malaysia (SPR).

In fact, the SPR Secretary, Dato’ Indera Ikmalrudin Ishak has in a press statement on 11 March reminded the candidates that they are prohibited from wearing any shirt or materials brandishing political party symbols or anything related to a candidate’s campaign at polling stations during election day.

The statement further explains that all individuals, including voter, candidates and personnel on duty are strictly prohibited from wearing a shirt/cap/face mask, or any other materials that has the name/symbol/photo of a political party or candidate that are contesting the election.

That includes all campaign materials and campaign tagline and slogan that alludes to support or leaning towards any political ideology.

Any individual who fails to adhere to these rules will be barred from entering the polling station and legal action will be taken against.

With that, it is arguable that the Prime Minister has violated the election rules by SPR.

Meanwhile, both Ismail and SPR have yet to issue any statement regarding the alleged breach of election rules.
