Managing director and local operating partner Datuk Azmir Jaafar said the company will meet or exceed the minimum wage of 20% of its full-time employees by the end of the year 2022.
This news comes after McDonald’s Malaysia announced investing RM1.35 billion to open 205 new restaurants as part of its Vision 2026.
The five-year business plan will be supported by 50,000 new workers and career opportunities to offer Malaysians as it’s committed to hiring 100% locals.
The expansion will bring the total number of McDonald’s restaurants in Malaysia to 500 by 2026.
Each new outlet, which will be mostly set up in second and third-tier cities, will see investments of about RM5 million to RM7 million per branch.
The investment will be utilised to invest in drive-through facilities and also remodelling 155 existing outlets.
To date, there are 318 restaurants and more than 15,000 workers nationwide.
During the pandemic, the company managed to open 35 new outlets in the past two years and grew its sales value by 15% to RM3.25 billion in 2021.
Azmir said McDonald’s Malaysia’s business focus would remain on fan favourite burgers which contributed 80% of its sales.
The McDelivery service registered a 35% market share last year, served by 6,000 active riders.
Its McCafe makes up 23.5% of the market share, serving more than three million cups of coffee per month.
Furthermore, McDonald’s Digital Platform saw accelerated growth in the previous year after introducing the Mobile Order & Collect feature.
Another RM300 million will be invested in training and development programmes to produce up to 15,000 Vocational Academy apprentices by 2026.
Meanwhile, Azmir said Malaysian youths can kickstart their career via McDonald’s Vocational Apprenticeship Programme under the government’s National Dual Training System.
