On 22nd February 2022, a video went viral online of a pair of construction workers on a window gondola, violently swaying back and forth due to strong winds in KL.
The harrowing ordeal saw the workers clinging onto the gondola’s railing as it swung in mid-air around a building. Fortunately, no injuries was reported from the incident.
It showed the window gondola with construction workers onboard being swung around in the blustery weather, dangerously close to TS Law Tower at Jalan Kemuning.
From a video shared by cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Haque on Twitter, the construction workers could be seen clinging onto the rails of the window gondola during the incident, while the platform continued to sway haphazardly in the fierce winds.
The workers were able to scramble out of the gondola to safety when the gondola crashed against the side of the skyscraper, and finally stopped swaying in mid-air due to the impact.
It was also reported that the gondola smashed into several windows and beams, damaging parts of the building. Strong winds and heavy rain had caused the gondola to swing violently. Two workers had been cleaning the building at the time of the incident.
A statement released by the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department also confirmed the incident.
They had received a stream of distress calls from onlookers, and a rescue team was subsequently dispatched to the scene.
According to a statement by the KL rescue department, the workers who were trapped on the gondola had managed to climb out of the gondola before the rescue team arrived at the scene.
Extreme changes in weather conditions is something that is beyond our control, and the best we can do is to take proper precautions and look out for one another. We are thankful that none of the workers were injured, and we hope that they’ll take the time to recover from the trauma of the incident.
