Wild elephant invades Perak military camp to look for food and this is not the first time!

On Monday (14 February), pictures and videos of a wild elephant seen roaming around Sri Banding Camp in Gerik, Perak as it ‘invades’ the army camp went viral on social media.

The video showed the elephant scavenging for food in the military ration storage, which belonged to the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). The elephant had also damaged some of the equipment at the place during the ‘invasion’.

In a report by Bernama, Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) Director, Yusoff Shariff confirmed the incident of the poor animal looking around the camp and poking its head into one of the buildings.

Yusoff said that the cause may be due to the camp’s faulty electrical fence.

Meanwhile, the Gerik Perhilitan will be providing assistance and advice to the camp for repair work. He also urges all parties to not provoke the animal if they come in contact with it.

Yusoff added that the elephant is believed to be the same one looking for food at the rest and service (R&R) area near Puncak Titiwangsa, Gerik, and it is used to humans and eating leftover food by humans.

Netizens, in general, shared a similar opinion that the elephant did not just break into the camp as humans are the invaders.

“The animal is invading? It’s trying to find food because of logging because there is no more source of food in the jungle.” a netizen said.

“Animals have never invaded. It’s humans that invade animal’s habitats.” another netizen said.

Nonetheless, this is not the first time such an incident happened. Speaking to Berita Harian, Yusoff said elephants have been trespassing the camp numerous times due to the lack of maintenance of the fences which allows the elephants to enter.

In 2018, a similar case happened near an army base in Tasik Banding, but unfortunately, the elephant died due to electrocution by the electric fence.
