The Lunar New Year is just around the corner and it is about time for those celebrating this festival to go on shopping and stock up some items for the celebration.

In conjunction with the festive season, supermarkets had been offering great deals to boost their sales too. However, there is absolutely no need to panic buy.

Recently, a few video recordings went viral on social media, showing how shoppers jostled to grab cartons of the popular carbonated soft drink often referred to as “Coke”.

According to the Facebook page Inforoadblock, the incident took place at a popular supermarket chain in Sitiawan, Perak.

In one of the videos, a man can be heard narrative the situation, describing the situation as akin to ‘robbery’ as he laughs away.

He added that the cartons of Coke were sold at RM20.88 and it is believed that the shoppers had went on frenzy over fears of missing out on a good deal.

Nonetheless, the same item can be found online from as low as RM22.68 not inclusive of the shipping fee.

Meanwhile, netizens in the comment section raised concerns about the spread of Covid-19. Despite all states having been moved to Phase 4 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) remains and still apply.

Netizens were also horrified at how the shoppers acted individualistically, rushing to hoard goods for themselves as if they were out of their minds.

On the other hand, this incident brings back memories when the pandemic first started in 2020, where people went on panic-buying while awaiting government announcements on impending quarantine measures.

Hopefully, this incident will not spark another Covid-19 cluster and put the residents there at risk.
