The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have advised Malaysians to be careful when making donations, especially in the aftermath of the recent floods.

In a statement, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said such donation drives will receive positive response from the public.

“The police are not ruling out the possibility that certain individuals will take advantage of the floods by collecting donations for their own use,” Kamarudin said.

Nonetheless, he said the police have not receive any reports about such fraud yet, but he reminded the public to be careful when making donations to ensure that the funds are channelled to the needy.

Kamarudin said the police are aware that the recent floods have caused massive destruction and many had lost their belongings and even their homes.

“There are various donation initiatives being established by political parties, non-governmental organisations, private companies and individuals to assist flood victims,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said the police will be monitoring these drives, especially those conducted through the Internet.

“Any suspicious activity will be investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code (for cheating),” he said.

Kamarudin also urged those with information on any donation fraud to contact the police through the CCID Scam Response Centre at 03-26101559/1599 or the nearest police station.
