Telekom Malaysia (TM) has just (6 December) announced that it will be conducting 5G trials with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB). Under this trial run, Unifi Mobile Postpaid customers will be able to access the 5G network at selected areas in the Klang Valley.

In a statement, TM said with the rollout of 5G, it will further advance value creation for consumers, micro-SMEs and corporate businesses.

TM added that the 5G trials with DNB are meant for service optimisation and customers with certified 5G devices will be able to experience 5G services.

TM also said it will continue to support the Government’s aspiration to deliver 5G for the nation and accelerate society, businesses and industry’s leap towards a Digital Malaysia.

DNB is a government-owned special purpose vehicle that has been given the mandate to deploy Malaysia’s national 5G network. The 5G spectrum such as 700MHz, 3.5GHz and 26/28GHz will be assigned only to DNB and they will provide 5G access to telcos through a wholesale agreement.

Last month, Reuters reported that none of the major telcos in Malaysia had signed a commercial deal with DNB. However, DNB did point out that it can only sort out those commercial deals after its Reference Access Offer (RAO) is published to the public.

The RAO covers matters such as access pricing and service terms and it is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Meanwhile, TM has not reveal the actual date of when 5G services will be available but this progress is in line with the 5G rollout plan that has been announced by DNB previously, who expects that the 5G network will turned on at these selected areas by the end of 2021.

Hence, it is likely that Unifi Mobile postpaid customers in these 3 cities will be able to tap on 5G in the upcoming days or weeks!

In terms of coverage, DNM said it expected to roll out 10% of 5G coverage in Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and Kuala Lumpur by the end of 2021 with a cumulative site count of 500.

In 2022, DNB will increase to 4,018 sites or 40% coverage in populated areas of Penang, Johor, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Perak. By 2024, DNB expects to achieve a 80% population coverage with over 7,500 sites.
