If you are interested to get casted in a local production scene, one of the criteria you must have is to have at least 1 million followers on your Instagram account.
This criteria has caused quite a stir on social media with netizens confused whether the selection is made based on popularity or actual talent.
A local actor Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin has took to Twitter to express his resentment after he discovered this criteria set by a broadcasting company, adding that he will be wasting his efforts to get the role considering that he will not hit the 1 million follower requirement even though he has 20 years’ worth of experience in acting.
Dari sebuah syarikat penyiaran ternama; Followers IG over 1 juta? Lambat lagilah aku nak dapat job di Malaysia ni. Walaupun sudah lebih 20 tahun aku mengabdikan diri, tapi kriteria yang macam ini yang mereka cari. Bye👋🏻 pic.twitter.com/ihV0dv8UP0— Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin (@iedildzuhrie) November 25, 2021
For those wondering, Iedil is one of the star from “Ngorat” and he currently has about 55,800 followers in his Instagram.
This policy has badly affect the long-time actors and most had called out for the broadcasting company for the “unfair requirement”.
Apart from Iedil, filmmaker Nam Rom also came forward to voice his opinion on the current situation in the Malaysia entertainment industry.
“It’s real guys. Not a joke. Neither a myth nor even an urban legend.” he wrote in the caption of his Instagram post.
“So what else? The decision is in your hands. (You) want your fave actors to appear on TV, follow them on social media. Bullsh*t!” Said the senior actor who has just gained up to 100k followers on Instagram.” he added.
The comment section was flooded with many of his followers, which mostly consist of well-known celebrities and directors, all sharing their opinion on the criteria by the broadcasting company.
Apa kriteria utk pelakon drama TV?Followers?Influencer?2021, saya cadang ke produser utk tukar pelakon utama sbb tk boleh bawa watak after 3 days of shoot.Lets reshoot!Tp penyiar ttp mahu ‘pelakon’ itu. Saya yg ditukar. Situasi drama tv tempatan adalah angkara penyiar itu sendiri— Yusry Abdul Halim (@YusryHalim) November 26, 2021
Singer-actor Yusry Abdul Halim has also expressed his dissatisfaction over the matter on Twitter, revealing that he has once been in a situation where the insta-famous talent was struggling to act out their role even after three days of filming.
“I suggested to reshoot everything. But the broadcaster still wanted the ‘actor’ in question. Instead of switching to another talent, I was the one who was dropped from the project. The situation of local TV dramas is the fault of the broadcaster.” the “Hikayat Merong Mahawangsa” director commented.
Meanwhile, a netizen pointed out even the current Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri only has less than 400,000 followers on his Instagram account.
