MPs Urges MACC To Probe Former Central Bank Chief Zeti Over 1MDB Funds

NewsMPs Urges MACC To Probe Former Central Bank Chief Zeti Over 1MDB...

The Former Central Bank Chief Zeti Akhtar Aziz recently came under the spotlight after the police allegedly found out that money linked to 1MDB was being held in an account owned by Zeti’s husband.

According to FMT, Subang Member of Parliament (MP) Wong Chen has in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (22 November) called for an investigation into the Former Central Bank Chief after it was confirmed that RM65 million of 1MDB-linked funds were held by a company belonging to her husband.

Wong also said that Zeti, being the governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), has failed to carry out its fiduciary duty to alert and report the illicit movement of billions of 1MDB money.

He added that if Zeti had done her job without fear or favour, the scandal could have been stopped and contained.

“There is no doubt that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and BNM need to fully investigate Zeti.” he was quoted saying by FMT.

Meanwhile, the Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim also called for the truth to be revealed.

“Does YB Tumpat agree that the MACC and other authorities should act as fast as possible because the whole country has been shaken by this news?” he said in the Dewan Rakyat.

In response to Abdul Azeez’s question, the Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said the police have taken over the investigation and “we need to wait for the investigation to be over”.

He said the police investigation involved all the names mentioned by the Baling MP, but the investigation is still ongoing.

As of Friday (19 November), MACC said they have managed to recover RM20.5 billion in assets and funds linked to 1MDB, which included the return of assets worth US$15.4 million (RM64.4 million) involving the accounts of Cutting Edge Industries Ltd owned by Tawfiq and Samuel Goh.

Tawfiq is married to Zeti, who is a witness in the corruption trial of former prime minister Najib Razak on charges related to 1MDB.

Tawfiq was previously questioned by the police in connection with 1MDB funds, but there has been no update on the investigation.
