According to a research conducted by Employment Hero, a complete people, payroll and benefits solution for small to medium-sized businesses, up to 72% of young Malaysian employees are considering to leave to country for better employment opportunities.

The report titled “2021 Employee Movement and Retention Report” was conducted after surveying a total of 1,004 employees and it is found that our numbers is significantly higher than our neighbouring country, Singapore at 55%.

It is also revealed that the main reason for Malaysians employees to look for employment outside of the country is the better pay and improved career prospects companies outside of Malaysia offers.

Employment Hero co-founder and chief executive officer Ben Thompson said the pandemic has given talents in Malaysia the reasons to change direction in their careers or venture overseas as the world opens up.

“The biggest indication that something needs to change is that 24% of Malaysians say they ‘love’ their job and 45% say they ‘like’ it, but most of them have already planned to leave it.”

“This is a problem for local employers and should prompt many to reassess their policies, working culture and retention strategies.” he was quoted saying by Bernama.

At the same time, the report also noted that 61% of the respondents planned to look for a new role within the next 12 months, with the highest rate out of all countries surveyed being Singapore (59%), Australia (48%), New Zealand (50%), and the United Kingdom (55%).

“Of those who want to leave their organisation, the top reason is a lack of career development (36%), followed by a lack of appreciation or recognition (27%), and a lack of training opportunities (26%).

“Beyond this, reasons extended to no pay rise, management woes, feeling overworked, and a lack of flexibility.” they said.
