Yesterday (8 November) was the nomination day for the Melaka state election and it is a big day for those who wanted to submit their candidacy for the state election.

Despite the prohibition by the Health Ministry (KKM) for any form of political gathering to prevent the spread of Covid-19, there were those who still decide to break the rules and proceed with it.

The Setiawangsa Member of Parliament (MP), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad took to Twitter to point out that Melaka UMNO Chairman, Ab Rauf Yusoh brought about 20 supporters during his walk to the nomination centre, including the former Prime Minister, Najib Razak.

Nik Nazmi said this is clearly a violation of the SOP and he questioned the Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri on what action he plans to take against the Melaka UMNO Chairman.

Previously, the Election Commission (EC) has banned gatherings by political partiesat all candidate nomination centre during the nomination period for the Melaka state election.

The EC secretary, Ikmalrudin Ishak said only candidate, proposer and seconder were allowed to enter the nomination centre.

“Supporters of political parties representing the candidate are not allowed to be present at the candidate’s nomination centre.” he said.

Meanwhile, Malay Mail reported that the entourage caught the attention of many and they were dispersed only after the police intervened.

As soon as the nomination papers were submitted and verified, the EC officials told the crowd, including the members of the press, to disperse and follow the Covid-19 resignations.

Besides, Muda leader, Syed Saddiq too had tweeted about this and asked whether the authorities would fine them individually or as a party.

Prior to the elections, the Health Ministry announced a ban on political gatherings and any social events related from the state polls, starting 25 October to 27 November.
