In May 2017, Malaysia had been horrified with a breaking news where a young Marine Cadet Officer, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain was believed to be tortured and murdered after being accused of stealing his friend’s laptop.

It was reported that the crime was committed in room 04-10 of the Jebat hostel building in National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) between 4.45 a.m. and 5.45 a.m. on 22 May 2017.

After nearly 4 years if waiting, the prayers from Malaysians had finally been answered and on 2 November 2021, the 18 accused were found guilty!

According to Astro Awani, the 18 UPNM students were found guilty on charges of murder, abetting murder, and injuring UPNM Marine Cadet Officer, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain.

The High Court Judge, Datuk Azman Abdullah said the 6 of the accused were found guilty under Section 304 of the Penal Code for murder and abetting to kill the deceased.

The 6 accused are Muhammad Akmal Zuhairi Azmal, Muhammad Azamuddin Mad Sofi, Muhammad Najib Mohd Razi, Muhammad Afif Najmudin Azahat Mohamad Shobirin Sabri and Abdoul Hakeem Mohd Ali.

Meanwhile, the 12 others were found guilty under Section 330 of the Penal Code for injuring the deceased.

The 12 accused are are Mohd Hafiz Fauzan Ismail, Mohamad Lukhmanul Hakim Mohd Zain, Ahmad Shafwan Berdal, Muhammad Amirul Asraff Mala, Luqman Hakim Shamsuri Agus, Muhammad Sufi Mohd Mustapha, Noriznan Izzairi Noor Azhar, Muhamad Ashraf Abdullah, Muhammad Danial Firdaus Azmir, Muhammad Hasif Ismail, Muhammad Adib Iman Fuad Adi Sany and Mohamad Syazwan Musa.

After a short break, the court reconvened and the Judge announced the sentence imposed to all of the accused.

For the 6 UPNM students who were found guilty of causing the unintentional death of UPNM Marine Cadet Officer, Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain, the Kuala Lumpur High Court had imposed a sentence of 18 years in prison.

Besides, the 6 students and the 12 other accused were sentenced to 3 years in prison under Section 330 of the Penal Code for being found guilty of injuring the deceased.

The decision was made according to Section 304(a) of the Penal Code which provides for imprisonment for up to 30 years and a fine if convicted.

The Judge also said the sentence starts from the date of their arrest.
