After a week of speculation, the former Melaka Menteri Besar (MB), Idris Haron had claimed that the state government had fallen after 3 of its state executive councillors (exco) resigned from their posts, and an Umno assemblyman withdrew his support for Sulaiman’s leadership.

Those who had withdrawn their support were Idris and Datuk Nor Azman Hassan from UMNO, Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad from Bersate, and Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee, as reported by FMT.

“We have resigned. This signifies that the state government has a deficit in support.” Idris said.

All 4 of them had appeared in a press conference to make the announcement yesterday (4 October).

“We know there are 11 assemblymen in the opposition who do not support the government, and with the four of us, it shows that the state government has lost its majority.” Azman said.

The Melaka state assembly has 28 seats, of which the Barisan Nasional (BN) has 14 seats, Bersatu has 2 seats, and 1 is held by and independent.

Despite withdrawing his support, Idris said he is still with UMNO and is ready to face the consequences of his actions. He stressed that his decision was in the interest of Melakans.

He elaborated that the government decisions had put Melaka in a “gridlock”, adding that there seemed to be “two lions on one mountain” in the current state administration.

He had however refused to explain what he meant by that.

“For now, we want to state that the four of us, along with the PH leadership, do not support the state government’s leadership.” Idris said.

On the other hand, Malay Mail reported that Melaka Pakatan Harapan (PH) has called for a meeting with the state governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam to discuss the future of the state.

Melaka PH Chairman, Adly Zahari said that PH’s priority as of now is to ensure to political stability in the state, given that the threat of Covid-19 still exists.

“In relation to that, 11 Pakatan Harapan state assemblymen, together with four independents, intend to hold a meeting with His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka to discuss the efforts that can be taken to ensure state political stability and continuity of government administration, can be continued.” he said.
