Political graphic designer, Street artist and Documentary film maker Mohd Fahmi Reza Bin Mohd Zarin, or Fahmi Reza was arrested yesterday (4 October) over his latest drawings of Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s and his “Keluarga Malaysia” concept.
Fahmi first posted on Twitter that he was called in to the Wangsa Maju police district headquarters for questioning over the controversial artwork. However, he was later freed on police bail.
“The police confiscated my phone, took my fingerprints and photograph, like I’m a criminal.”

Selepas ditahan sejak pukul 4 tadi, polis rampas phone aku, ambil cap jari & ambil gambar aku macam penjenayah. Mereka nak ambil DNA tapi aku tak bagi. Kemudian polis buat keputusan utk bebaskan aku dengan jaminan polis. Tak perlu tidur lokap malam ni! #SatireIsNotACrime pic.twitter.com/1Auodahe6A
“They wanted to take my DNA sample. I didn’t allow it. They decided to release me on police bail. No need to sleep in a lockup tonight!” he said on his social media account.
Meanwhile, he said the police had informed him that they had opened an investigation paper against him under the “#AktaSakitHati”, which is believed to be in reference to the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).
He then confirmed that he had been questioned about a poster he drew on “Keluarga Malaysia”, with a caricature of prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
“Later, police made the decision to release me on police bail. No need to sleep in the lockup tonight! #SatireIsNotACrime” he said in a series of tweet.
Before he went for the questioning, Fahmi posted his caricatures of the past three prime ministers and Ismail Sabri, at the same time stating that he was being investigated for lampooning Datuk Seri Najib Razak, but not Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
Fahmi the pointed out that he was being probed by the police for the caricature of Ismail Sabri, implying the preferential treatment on the part of Umno leaders.
Nonetheless, this is not the first time Fahmi is being investigated over his drawings.
Fahmi had been detained numerous times this year, with the most notably one being a Spotify playlist titled “This is: Dengki Ke?” in reference to an Instagram remark made by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
While the most recent one was his artwork satirising Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and the health minister.
