The Universiti Malaya Students Union (KMUM) has call out to the administration of University Malaya to explain the steep hike in tuition fees for the 2021/2022 academic year.
In the statement, KMUM said that there had been a 10% to 60% price hike in tuition fees involving many courses and at the same time expressed their concerns for students who find it difficult to afford the payments.
According to the fee schedule provided by KMUM, it is said that among the degree courses affected is the Bachelor of Finance degree fee which see an increase from RM9,740 to RM13,900 (43% hike), and Bachelor of Accounting (RM7,860 to RM17,000, a 128% increase).
“These courses happen to be programmes in the arts stream.”
“The teaching methods for these courses don’t involve the use of practical tools, such as for students in the engineering, science and pharmaceutical faculties.” KMUM said.
Meanwhile, the Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws degrees are seeing a 0.2%, 0.8% and 0.9% fee increase, respectively.
“Ironically, the business, economic and law programmes are not seeing a drastic increase in fees.”
“KMUM is of the view that the unequal fee increments have created doubts and suspicions among students.”
“Thus, KMUM is urging the university to reconsider the fee increases for these courses.” KMUM added.
On the other hand, courses in the science stream sees an increase of 10% to 60% in tuition fee for the upcoming session.
KMUM then said they hope the administration can clarify the fee increments and to give reasonable explanation which is in line with the quality of education provided.
Meanwhile, this is contrary to what the Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad had promised back in June 2021, where she said there will be no fee increase for tertiary-level students.
In addition, Noraini had requested the universities to not impose activity fees, as most students were not staying on campus amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
