What’s the 12th Malaysia Plan all about?

NewsWhat's the 12th Malaysia Plan all about?

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob is set to table the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on next Monday (27 September).

So, what is this Malaysia Plan about?

According to Bernama, the 12MP is the country’s 5-year (2021-2025) development road map and it gives Malaysians a brief insight of where the Malaysian government is leading the nation towards.

The tabling of the 12MP has been postponed at least twice since the original date on 6 August last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the political turmoil that happened in the country in the past few months.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the 12MP will be inline with the Malaysian Family theme, where the government will prioritise the people’s welfare, social protection and people-centred projects.

According to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, he said the Covid-19 pandemic has changed the pattern of government spending in shaping the future of the country.

He added that the government now has to focus more on post-pandemic developments in the next 5 years.

At the same time, Mustapa said new mega projects were no longer the government’s priority, but the government will still focus on the ongoing projects such as the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS).

He said although new projects such as ports and airports can help boost the country’s economy, but the government will only plan for these once the country’s economy recovers, which the recovery is expected to be in 2023.

Similar to the previous Malaysia Plans which were introduced since 1966, the government will be focusing on bridging the development gap between states with more national expenditure to be distributed to develop less developed states.

According to the official portal of the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister’s Department, the 12MP is the last part of the National Recovery Plan under the 6R approach (Resolve, Resilient, Restart, Recovery, Revitalise and Reform), which will build a solid foundation in shaping a high-tech and high-income country with equitable prosperity for the people.

The 12MP will be debated in the Parliament from 28 September to 4 October before it is finalised by the ministers.
