On Tuesday (21 September), the Korean Embassy has issued a warning to Malaysian consumers regarding the increasing reports of fake “Korea Filter” face masks being sold in Malaysia.
The Embassy added that these face masks, which Malaysians bought online, are not actually tested and approved by the Korean authorities, and there are possibilities that they could be inferior or are low-quality products.
“It is important to note that not all KF face masks sold on e-commerce platforms or pharmacies are from Korea, some are manufactured in other countries without being tested and approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea.”
A quick search on any e-commerce platform and you’ll be able to find a number of face masks under the keyword “KF94 Face Mask”.
However, the counterfeits often have vague descriptions such as ‘reusable’, ‘washable’, ‘Korea style’, or ‘Korea FDA certified’. One important point to note is that the counterfeits does not have proper proper product specification on the packaging.
Meanwhile, the Embassy also warns about the prices of the KF face masks that seem too good to be true, especially when they are significantly lower than Korea’s own market price, where the market price for “KF-94” is RM4.38 per piece and “KF-AD” is RM2.16 per piece.
The Embassy also suggest you to check the authenticity of the product, if you have purchased a KF80, 94 or AD face mask. You can do so at the MFDS database here, however, everything is in Korean (read the guide below).
If you were not able to search for the product you have purchased on the database, there is a high chance that it is a counterfeit and the Embassy strongly discourages it use.
Here’s how to check if the product you have purchased is genuine:
1. Search for the Product Name (품목명) OR Product Code on the back of your purchased mask. (The Embassy suggests using Google Lens to copy and paste the Korean text, or just search via the product code.)
2. Go to THIS website.
3. Paste the name of the Korean KF face mask or the product code.
4. If the product is a genuine KF face mask, it will show up on the list.
