Yesterday (18 September), a 19 year-old teenager is feared to have drowned after jumping into a dam in Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor to save his friend.

According to MalaysiaKini, it is understood that the 2 youths were taking photos on a bridge in Kampung Pertak when one of them accidentally fell into the water while taking a selfie.

Selangor Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director, Norazam Khamis said they received a distress call at 3.54 p.m. regarding the incident and they have immediately deployed a rescue team.

The search was concluded at 6.02 p.m. when the rescue team found the victim’s body in the waters.

“The incident involved a 19 year-old youth who drowned while trying to save his friend who believed to have fallen into a dam.”

“His friend, aged 20 year-old, managed to rescue himself by swimming to the river bank before the rescue team arrive at the location, while the victim did not appear after jumping into the dam.”

Norazam added that the rescue team consists of 7 firefighters, a team of divers and a boat to search for the victim.

The victim was later identified as Hamzah Ilya Azman, while his friend was Ahmad Nabil Yasin Abdul Rashih.

After the incident, the JBPM has issued a warning to all visitors at the place to be more vigilant, especially when they are visiting places with water.

“Those visiting rivers, waterfalls or the sea, if it starts to rain, please leave the area immediately to avoid being affected by flash floods, sudden rise in water levels, or being swept away by currents.”

“As for those who go jungle trekking, be mindful of taking only common routes to avoid getting lost or trapped.” he said.
