NewsPH urges the M'sian Govt to clarify Malaysia’s Position after tension rises...

While tension between the 2 superpowers raises, the Pakatan Harapan (PH) had urged the Malaysian government to make clear the nation’s position in the new military deal involving Australia, the US and the UK, dubbed AUKUS.

The Opposition coalition has urged the Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Foreign Affairs Minister, Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah to present a ministerial statement in Parliament to protect Malaysia’s best interests.

“The move by AUKUS is likely to increase the tension in the Asian region.”

“Malaysia being at the geographical centre of these increasing geopolitical competitions must deliberate and state clearly a position.”

“It is in the interest of Malaysia to make it clear that we would work with all sides but we would like the United States and China to lower the temperature in the South China Sea and the wider Asian region.” PH said in a statement.

It is reported that the trilateral military pact is a major development in the region as the it is backed with an A$90 billion (RM273.4 billion) nuclear power submarine and has raised geopolitical tension in Asia.

“A rapidly escalating situation is not going to be in the interest of any regional nations.” PH added.

The statement was signed by Mohamad Sabu (Amanah), Johari Abdul (PKR) and Liew Chin Tong (DAP), where both of them were former defense ministers and deputy ministers respectively.

Yesterday, AUKUS announced their security partnership for the Indo-Pacific region as they aim to contain China’s growing influence in the Asia-Pacific region.

In the deal, the US and UK will be providing Australia with the technology and capability to deploy nuclear-powered submarines.

However, the leaders said the submaries will not be fielding with nuclear weapons but only using nuclear propulsion systems for vessels and to guard against future threats.
