Yesterday (13 September), the national badminton player of Malaysia, Goh Jin Wei has left Malaysians in shock after she announced her retirement from Badminton via YouTube today.

She also explain that her decision was made due to her existing health issues.

In the video, she explained that she is still struggling to cope with her physical condition after being diagnose with stomach ailment that required a colectomy procedure (a type of surgery used to treat colon diseases) in mid-2019.

She explains that she has not been able to recover fully ever since and is dependent on a “number” of medications daily for continuous treatment.

“Due to health reasons, I have to make this tough decision to end my badminton career way earlier than I thought.”

“I quit with a lot of regrets and unwillingness. But I believe that I can still excel in other fields in the future as long as I am willing to work hard for it.” she said.

Jin Wei then expressed her heartfelt gratitude to those who had supported her throughout her entire career.

Nonetheless, Jin Wei’s shocking decision has crushed the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) aim to rebuild a formidable young squad for the Paris Olympics 2024, as Jin Wei is set to play a prominent role in the women’s singles event.

Previously, Jin Wei has been performing well since she joined the seniors in 2017, before the stomach ailment hampered her progress. Due to her inactivity, she had slipped from her career-best 24th to 146th in the world rankings.

Meanwhile, BAM has yet to release a statement over the matter.

In the farewell video, Jin Wei also wishes the best for her best buddies, Lee Zii Jia and Lai Pei Jing, and hope they can fulfill her dream by making Malaysians proud with bigger achievements.

Zii Jia then responded with a Facebook post dedicating to her and told her to stay strong.

“I will carry on your dream and do my best to fulfil it. Don’t worry about it!” he said.

Being a Malaysia, we are all proud of you, Jin Wei and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours!
