Yesterday (8 September), the Menteri Besar of Selangor, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has issued a statement to respond to the recent widespread criticism of the Selangor government’s plans to degazette the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve (KLNFR) for development.

In the statement, Amirudin said the state government will now begin the process of re-gazetting the forest too.

“The state government will stop its plan to develop the area and will cancel the move to give ownership of the land to the company involved.”

“We would like to emphasise that all previous de-gazettement processes have followed all procedures and procedures stated in accordance with the law.” Amirudin said, adding that the decision was made during the state executive council meeting.

He also reassured that the state government will stop the development plan, as they work towards regazetting the Kuala Langat Utara Forest Reserve.

“At the same time, 581.1 hectares of forest land that was initially supposed to replace the degazetted (KLNFR), in Sg Panjang, Ampang Pecah and Bukit Broga, will remain as a permanent forest reserve.”

Amirudin also pointed out that only 104 acres out of a total of 1,326 acres of the KLNFR will remain degazetted to complete the land ownership to Busut Baru Orang Asli village to resolve issues that first arose since 2006.

“They were relocated from their original settlement in 1994 for the purpose of the construction of Kuala Lumpur International Airport.” he said.

Meanwhile, he also said the state government will consider a smaller portion of the area to be remained degazetted for the purpose of the upcoming East Coast Rail Link alignment.

Amirudin also stressed that the Selangor government is based on the principle of accountability.

Hence, they will write to the state speaker to convene a meeting of the Select Committee on Capability, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) to answer any issues raised regarding the previous process involving the gazetting.
