Prime Minister Muhyiddin expected to meet Agong on Monday amidst rumours of resigning

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to meet the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Monday, 16 August.

“There is strong speculation at the moment that the prime minister is on the verge of resigning,” the report said, adding that he is expected to meet with Perikatan Nasional party leaders today.

Meanwhile, while citing unnamed UMNO and Bersatu sources, reported that the two of the component parties are expecting Muhyiddin to announce his resignation soon.

“The resignation letter is ready, but we are not sure when he will make the announcement,” report quoted an unnamed source as saying.

One of his Cabinet members, however, has denied the rumours that the Prime Minister has signed his resignation letter.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Special Functions) Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof was reported saying that such rumours were inaccurate and speculative.

He also denied that Muhyiddin called for the Cabinet to attend a special meeting today.

“Where is the PM resigning today? The claims that there is an emergency Cabinet meeting this afternoon is also incorrect because I am still at home with my family,” he was quoted as saying.

The rumours about Muhyiddin’s resignation comes after he admitted yesterday that he has lost the majority support in Parliament.

In a special televised address on Friday, 13 August, the Bersatu president said that it’s unfortunate that some members of Parliament (MPs) have drawn their support from him and that it now “raises doubts about my legitimacy as Prime Minister and of Perikatan Nasional (PN) as the ruling government”.

He said that he has two choices moving forward: to resign or to hold an election.
