Malaysians had been suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic for over a year now and we are reporting a constant surge in Covid-19 cases daily.
However, this matter does not seem as serious as it is for some of our leaders, and it could probably be a number game to them.
Yesterday (6 August), the Menteri Besar (MB) of Kedah, Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has again came under the limelight of social media for his “joke” made in a press conference when a serious question about the increasing number of Covid-19 deaths was being raised.
Kedah has been experiencing a spike in the Covid-19 cases, with 1,371 new cases and 22 deaths being reported yesterday (6 August). Several hospitals in the state were forced to place bodies in shipping containers as the mortuary runs out of space.
The video that when viral on social media showed how Sanusi reacted when he is being asked by a reporter whether there were enough containers to store the Covid-19 dead in the state.
He responded with a big laugh and said “There are enough containers for dead bodies. Anyone who wants to enter, give your names.”
Obviously, the response he gave was inappropriate and netizens expressed their disappointment in him, citing with hypocrisy that he is a “Cap Ayam” leader.
Meanwhile, the incident had caught the attention of the Members of Parliament (MP) from the Opposition and they had criticised Sanusi for being insensitive and uncouth.
Among them were Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, where he said “What’s the problem with this Kedah menteri besar who can’t stop speaking without manners? If you’ve failed to take care of the people, don’t try to be rude!”
Segambu MP Hannah Yeoh also expressed her disappointment in his remarks and his standards, while lawyer Syahredzan Johan slammed Sanusi’s “joke”, pointing out that some 160 people lost their lives throughout the country today.
Some netizens also called for Sanusi’s resignation as the Kedah MB, saying that they feel “secondhand embarrassment” every time they saw him, adding that they did not know if Sanusi was “crazy or stupid”.
A netizen pointed out that Sanusi had no empathy whatsoever, adding that he does not recognise the leader from PAS as the Kedah MB.
“As a Kedahan, I am embarrassed. It is such bad luck to have a MB like this.” another netizen said.
Nonetheless, Sanusi is known for his insensitive remarks and comments. Previously, he asked about the demolition of a shrine outside the Alor Setar railway station, where he said: “Why? Do you want to take home (the debris from the temple)?”
Last September, he was reported to have laugh at a woman’s request for food aid while handling the disaster operations control centre hotline when Kota Setar was placed under EMCO.
However, his aide then explained that it was a mere misunderstanding, where Sanusi had laughed because the woman had not known it was the MB on the line.
The latest one being at a test drive of a Ford Raptor, where he broke the MCO SOPs and told the woman who took his photograph that he would buy her a better mobile phone so she could take more beneficial photos.
