Last night (31 July), Malaysia’s badminton pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik managed to beat Indonesia’s pair in the men’s doubles match and win Malaysia’s firs medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The badminton pair staged a superb comeback and bagged the bronze medal after defeating one of their biggest rivals, Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia with a 17-21, 21-17, 21-14 result at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.

In fact, this is the Malaysian’s pair second win against the Indonesian pair in the nine meetings. Previously, Aaron and Wooi Yok had lost to the Ahsan-Hendra pair in the group stage last week.

During the competition, Aaron and Wooi Yok lost the first game that was closely fought. However, they made a astounding comeback in the next 2 games and finally won Malaysia’s first bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 games.

Aaron and Wooi Yok soon sank to their knees and scream in delight before lying flat on the court trying to comprehend what they had just achieved for their country.

Meanwhile, in an interview after the games, Wooi Yok revealed his joy after winning the medal and said that he was under great pressure in the second game.

“Although it wasn’t a gold-medal match, it was still the most important match of my life. Aaron and I have turned this into the best achievement of our careers.” he said, cited by The Star.

“This would not have been possible if I had not worked on overcoming my past confidence issue and weaknesses.”

“I hope this is just the beginning. I want to fight for more glory.”

On the other hand, Aaron said his family was the reason for him making the comeback for they had given him strength and support to fight in the second game.

“When they were leading the second game by four points, I told myself we’ve got to sustain and handle the pressure.”

“At that time, the first thing that I was thinking of was my family.”

“They are the ones who give me the strength to carry on.” Aaron said, while he dedicated the win yesterday (31 July) to his wife Goh Mui Kee and daughters Albee Chong Rui and Alyssa Chia Shin.
