Two former local council presidents (YDP) of the Municipal Council in Selangor had been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) following the suspicion of accepting bribes from project contractors and housing developers in their respective areas.

According to the sources, the 2 YDPs who now hold the position of 47-year-old District Officer (DO) were detained at the MACC headquarters when they were present to testify late last night (22 July), as reported by Utusan.

He said a contractor involved was also detained to assist in the investigation for bribing the two suspects to monopolize projects offered in the two municipalities led by the two YDPs.

“The 42-year-old contractor involved is believed to control 16 companies registered in the name of his relatives and employees to obtain projects in the two Municipal Councils.”

“It is estimated that the monopolized projects reached millions of ringgit from 2018 to this year.” he said.

He also explained that for each project obtained, the two former YDPs received a bribe of 5 percent of the project value.

In addition, various forms of bribes were given to the two suspects including a house worth RM1 million, cash amounting to RM500,000 and a travel package to Europe to approve planning and development permission belonging to a housing developer company.

“Several series of raids have been made around Selangor since early yesterday morning.”

“The investigation is conducted under section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti -Corruption Commission Act. If convicted, he can be imprisoned for not more than 20 years and fined five times the value of the bribe.” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Commissioner of Operations, Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya confirmed the arrest but declined to comment further.
