A 28 year-old Malaysian man was caught after he attempted to swim across the Penang Strait to meet his friend to avoid the authorities after he failed to get a travel permit with a valid reason to inter-district travel.

The incident happened on 12 July when the man attempted to swim from a ferry jetty at Tanjung City Marina in Georgetown to Seberang Perai, according to Astro Awani. Halfway through the strait, he changed his mind and turn back towards the jetty after he ran out of steam.

Nonetheless, he was arrested by the officers at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal (SPCT) as they spotted him drifting in the sea at about 6pm.

According to the Timur Laut Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Soffian Santong, he said that based on the interview conducted, the man said he was determined to swim Seberang Perai as he wanted to meet his friend after failing to get an inter-district permit from the police.

“No identity document was found on the man, instead he only stated personal details like his name and identity card number orally.”

“Further investigation found that the man was from Bayan Lepas, Penang and did not have a job.” he added.

Nonetheless, Soffian said that the police managed to contact the man’s mother and she said that her son had not returned home for a long time. However, she suspects that he has been homeless and is still having a drug addiction problem.

Soffian later said that the man is currently receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital (HPP) after the check ups found that he is suffering a broken arm. He added that the investigation will resume after he is being discharged from the hospital.
