Social NewsMalaysia Health Minister mistakenly speaks 'Spanish Fly' in reference to 'Spanish Flu'

While giving a speech in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) back in April 2021, Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba caught the attention of the social media again after the audiences caught him saying “Spanish fly” in reference to the deadly pandemic that took over a third of the world population a century ago.

In the short clip that was circulated on the social media, Adham Baba is seen to be delivering his speech enthusiastically when he slipped up and changed a health crisis into a sex stimulant.

“In the world, 2.8 million people died because of Covid-19.”

“The Spanish ‘fly’ that happened in 1916 took around a million lives.” he said.

After noticing that none of the audience understands what was he referring to, he tries to explain that he was referring to the ‘Wabak Spain’ which translates into ‘Spanish flu’.

Despite his explanation, the hashtag #Spanishfly started trending on Twitter.

The hashtag #Spanishfly also started trending on Twitter.

For those who are not aware, Spanish fly is more commonly being used as a reference to a sex stimulant that is derived from blister beetles and is notable for its vesicant properties.

Nonetheless, netizens were not impressed by Adham Baba for he does not even know how to differentiate ‘Spanish fly’ and ‘Spanish flu’. Netizens also went all out to criticize him and bring up the past, including the warm water topic, as well as the conference he went which includes up to 500 countries.

On the other hand, the death toll of 1 million as claimed by Adham Baba was incorrect too. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Spanish influenza or Spanish flu took around 50 million lives worldwide.
