Always be vigilant when it comes to transferring money to the others online, as there were many “too good to be true” rewards out there, which require you to pay an upfront fee.
As reported by Sinar Harian, a senior citizen recently lost RM23,300 after he allegedly transfer the amount upfront to redeem the cash prize he was entitled to. To make things worse, the scammer pretended to be an old friend of his online to gain his trust.
According to Head of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) of the Negeri Sembilan Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK), Superintendent Aibee Abd Ghani, he said that the senior citizen first receive a message on Facebook from an old acquaintance of his.
The old friend then shared the senior citizen a link to click on, claiming that he was eligible to receive the B40 retiree assistance.
“His friend informed that he (the scammer) received the financial aid and the senior citizen shared his interest in getting the help as well.”
When the senior citizen clicked on the link provided, he was connected to an ‘agent’ who inform that he had won a cash award of RM100,000, but he had to pay a fee in advance to redeem it.
Nonetheless, the senior citizen followed their instruction and had made 20 transactions into different accounts between the period from 16 December 2020 to 18 June 2021, before he realised that he was being scammed.
He then went to the nearest police station to lodge a police report regarding the scam and Aibee said that the case is currently being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Aibee added that his department had received around 45 investigation papers on scams that operate with the similar method.
“People are advised to be more vigilant with the kind of messages they receive, whether through old or new contacts on social media,” he added.
As a reminder, do remember to verify links or websites before clicking into it. In addition, there are many ‘too good to be true’ scams out there and try not to believe in those.
