The Senior Minister of Education, Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin had in a press conference today (20 June) said that the Ministry is facing teacher shortage in 4 states and they are introducing a special one-off recruitment package to hire up to 18,702 teachers.
He also mentioned that the application will be opened starting 7 July and it will be for grade DG41 education service officers. These teachers recruited will be placed in their respective schools in stages starting October too.
“This one-off and large-scale recruitment of teachers aims to solve the shortage issues in four states, apart from ensuring the implementation of teaching and learning runs smoothly during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

He also revealed the states that currently faced a teacher shortage were Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor and Johor.
Dr Radzi on the other explained the matter in a more granular manner, saying the teacher shortage of these 4 states were at their critical level, however, it does not meant that all subjects taught at schools will be affected.
The shortage of teachers or primary schools were for the subject of English, History, Special Education, Islamic Education, and Information Technology. On the other hand, for secondary schools, they are Bahasa Malaysia, English, Special Education, Islamic Education, and Design and Technology.
However, he did not give details on how to apply for the recruitment, and the only information given was a notice or advertisement will be publish on 7 July.
