This morning (16 June), the Prime Minister’s principal private secretary, Datuk Marzuki Mohamad had announced that all civil servants should use his official name for all formal documents, and it will be effective immediately.
Moving forward, the Prime Minister’s name should be addressed as follows:
- Mahiaddin bin. Md Yasin
- Tan Sri Dato Haji Mahiaddin bin. Haji Md Yasin
For those who do not know, Mahiaddin is the Prime Minister’s given name, however, he is better known through his adopted name of Muhyiddin.
Nevertheless, according to FMT, the circular do not change anything, except for the formal documents. As to the media and public, Muhyiddin will still be his preferred name.
As reported, the circular was motivated by a High Court ruling in April that revoked a detention order from Muhyiddin issued when he was the home minister last year, on the grounds that it was not issued using his unofficial name.
As a result, the man who alleged to have been involved in drug trafficking walked out of the courts a free man.
The judge also ruled that the Prime Minister must use his gazetted name of Mahiaddin Md Yasin as stated in his MyKad under the Ministerial Functions Act 1969.
