NewsHealth Minister announces that Malaysia is developing 2 new Covid-19 vaccines

The Health Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba had in a statement yesterday (13 June) announced that Malaysia is currently developing its very own Covid-19 vaccine as an effort to speed up the vaccination progress of the country.

He said that the Institute for Medical Research Malaysia (IMR) is in the process of developing 2 different types of Covid-19 vaccines and they are the messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine and an inactivated vaccine.

“We hope this would increase the vaccine capacity besides preparing Malaysia for future developmental capacity of vaccines in addition to preparing Malaysia to face future pandemics,” he said.

However, he did not give any details on whether the vaccines will be made based on vaccines made by other countries or at which stage the development is currently at.

Nevertheless, he said that the ongoing National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme (PICK) currently offers 3 imported vaccines and they include the Pfizer-BioNTech, Sinovac and AstraZeneca.

The different types of vaccine

According to the United States’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the mRNA vaccines are a new type of vaccine in which they teach our cells to make a protein that triggers an immune response in our bodies and in this way, we are protected from getting infected the real virus in the event it enters our body.

On the other hand, inactivated vaccines uses the killed version of the virus that cause the disease to trigger the immune response in our bodies, without risking a serious disease response.

According to NST, the health experts had called for the Malaysian Government to broaden its sources for the Covid-19 vaccine to include other vaccines to speed up the vaccination progress.

They claimed that the supply issues were due to purported vaccine hoarding by wealthy nations and this risks the entire nation when new variants of Covid-19 virus continue to spread.

They believe that developing our own vaccine hasten the progress to achieve herd immunity and will stop the endless loops of lockdowns that has a damaging effect on our livelihoods and the economy.
