2 Kelana Jaya Line LRT collides Head-on and causes over 200 injured

Two trains from the Kelana Jaya Line LRT collided head-on yesterday (24 May) night and it resulted in 213 individuals being injured, whereas 47 of which were seriously injured.

The accident happened at 8.45 p.m. in a tunnel between Kampung Baru and KLCC station. The cause of the accident was mainly due to due a miscommunication at the operations centre.

As reported by The Edge, Dang Wangi OCPD Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said “It is learnt that one train, heading from the Kampung Baru station to Gombak, was reportedly being test-driven following a fault to ensure it was on the right track.”

“The train to Gombak that was being driven automatically was carrying 213 passengers while the train from the Kampung Baru Station to Gombak that was faulty, with the exception of its driver, was empty”

Nonetheless, the tragic accident had sent passengers flying and they can be seen lying on the the floor with shattered glass and some of them were even bleeding.

All passengers were safely evacuated to the platform at 9.50 p.m. and subsequently sent to the nearby hospital for treatment.

Prasarana Malaysia Berhad President, Dato Sri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman too had responded to the matter on the next day (25 May), stating that the incident was purely an accident and he expressed sympathy towards the victims of the incident.

In addition, he said that all 213 passengers will receive a compensation of RM1,000 irrespective of their condition. Those who are hospitalized will have their medical fees supported by Prasarana too. However, this amount will depend on the passengers individual condition.

“For those whose incomes and sources of livelihood are affected by this incident, we are very concerned, thus we will help them for a reasonable number of days until they can work again.”
