A man was arrested by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) for assaulting and spitting on a People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) officer who requested him to comply with the SOP at a morning market in Sitiawan, Perak.
According to Utusan, the incident happened at the market at 6.45 a.m. on Saturday (15 May).
According to the RELA officers, they were stationed at the entrance of the market to enforce the SOP compliance during the Movement Control Order (MCO). According to the SOP, morning markets can only operate between 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The RELA officers had stop the man from entering the morning market as the market wasn’t open yet. The RELA officers had asked the man to wait for about 15 minutes before he proceed so.
Unexpectedly, the man went mad and started hitting the RELA officer and uttered harsh words. Meanwhile, the other RELA officers and bystanders immediately stepped in to stop the man.
After the RELA officer stood up, the man tried to push him and threatens to make things worse for him. He even spat at the face of the RELA officer while he was on the ground.
However, the RELA officer did not fight back as he did not to want escalate the situation further. Subsequently, he went to the hospital and lodge a police report to hold the man accountable for his actions.
According to Manjung district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Nor Omar, the police had arrested the man yesterday (17 May) after receiving a report and that the case is now being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
If found guilty, the suspect can be sentenced to three years in prison or a fine, or both. He added that the man has two criminal records related to drug abuse offences.
