Political graphic designer, Street artist and Documentary film maker Mohd Fahmi Reza Bin Mohd Zarin, or Fahmi Reza was arrested on 23 April for alleged sedition on matters relating to a comment from the Malaysia Queen, Tunku Azizah.
Dang Wangi district police chief Asst Comm, Mohd Zainal Abdullah confirmed the arrest and said that Fahmi Reza has been held overnight and will be remanded today.
The investigations will be carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, while the arrest of Fahmi Reza’s was for his artwork and a playlist on Spotify that had the image of the Queen on it using the #DengkiKe monicker.
Apparently, a police report was lodged against him by PAS MP Ahmad Fadhli Bin Shaari on 22nd April 2021.
This is not the first time that Fahmi was being taken into custody over sedition allegations. He had several brushes with the authorities for his satirical art works for criticizing political leaders and prominent Malaysian figures.
Fahmi explained that despite being convicted in the past for his caricatures, he has the rights to express himself freely and being able to exercise his civic responsibility to speak up on current affairs remains of utmost importance.
Ironically, the comment of a netizen on whether someone will be charged under the sedition act came true.
