On 15 April, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had announced in Facebook that they will be focusing on expanding the internet to more rural areas.

In the statement, MCMC had stated that they have listed 839 remote locations for eligible service provider licensees to tender and an evaluation is currently being carried out on who’s best to provide the service.

The tender process closes on 15 April and the evaluation will start as soon as the tender closes. The remote locations includes 178 indigenous settlements in Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Johor, Negeri Sembilan and Selangor.

As for East Malaysia, they will reach out to the interior of Sabah and Sarawak with 138 and 523 communities respectively.

MCMC said that these locations were located far from most telecommunication network facilities and it is impossible for them to install telecommunication towers immediately due to terrain conditions. Hence, MCMC will be providing the communities in those area with free WiFi access of up to 35Mbps.

This project is scheduled to be completed by October 2021 this year and this initiative is a temporary solution to close the digital gaps between the citizens from the urban and rural area.

The free Wifi will last for 2 years before any permanent infrastructure can be built for telecommunication network connectivity.
