Do you find loud muffler sound from modified exhaust pipes annoying? Well, motorist who had modified their motorcycles with noisy exhaust pipes can now be fined or jailed.
According to Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director, Datuk Azisman Alias says that all exhaust (silencer) installed on a vehicle should always be in a working condition. This is in accordance to Rule 103 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Rules 1959 (LN 170/1959).
It is important to note that the modifications on exhaust pipes should not cause it to make loud muffler sound.
“Anyone who made this modification is deemed to have commit an offence and they can be fined for up to RM2,000 or jailed for up to 6 months.” in the statement Datuk Azisman Alias gave Sinar Harian.
Furthermore, the police are empowered by law (Section 64 of the Road Transport Act 1987) to seize these vehicles as to prevent the offence from being committed again.
Datuk Azisman Alias said that he believe that these kind of exhaust pipes are a trend among the youngsters as it is said that they can improve the speed of the vehicle and to beautify their car too.
He says that JSPT conducts operations with other departments and agencies to inspect the exhaust pipes of vehicles. They will measure the volume of noise created from the exhaust and determine whether they are in the acceptable level, a fine will be given to the vehicle owner.
In addition to that, Datuk Azisman Alias wanted to make it clear that all modifications to a vehicle should be submitted to Road Transport Department (JPJ) for approval.
