CNY SOP criticized widely by public, Ministry appeal for re-evaluation

The Covid-19 situation in Malaysia remains uncontrollable even though the Movement Control Order (MCO) had been implemented in almost whole of Malaysia. To prevent the situation from worsening due to the upcoming Chinese New Year, Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had drawn up some strict SOPs for the public.

Check out the full list of the SOPs here.

  • Gathering for CNY celebration are only allowed among family members who are staying under the same roof.
  • Reunion dinners are only allowed among family members who are from the same household.
  • Prayers at temple are not allowed, except for the temple’s committee members. It is however limited to 5 person at a time. Those celebrating are encouraged to do the prayers at home.
  • All cultural activity or performance, such as lion dance, or chinese opera are not allowed.
  • House visits are not allowed.
  • Interstate travel remains banned.

Backlashes from public

Upon receiving this SOP, there were a huge dissatisfaction from the public. Among the criticism was if the gathers were only for family members who are staying under the same roof, it is literally a normal family dinner. Family members had been facing each other every single day.

Another good one was when the Ministry allows night markets to operate, people commented that they’ll gather at the night markets. It does not seem to break the CNY SOP implemented.

Most had commented that there were too many loopholes in the SOP and criticize the government for not doing their homework before releasing the SOP.

Appealing for SOP to be reviewed

After receiving such fierce backlash from the public, the National Unity Ministry said that they will be appealing for the SOP to be reviewed again by National Security Council (NSC).

Although the SOPs are drawn up after consulting with 21 religious, cultural, and relevant Chinese-based organisations, it is still poorly written.
